Ted Hoss, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 25 in Aurora, IL. He was born February 27, 1937 in Aurora, Illinois, the son of Theodore and Evelyn (Ritter) Hoss. Ted was united in holy matrimony to Pat Halpin in 1958 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Aurora.
Ted graduated from Aurora East High School in 1955 and Loyola University in 1959. He received his master's degree from Northern Illinois University. He also attended Bridgeport University in Connecticut and Columbia University in New York City. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, honorary Educational Fraternity. He was employed in the Geneva School District at the Middle School for 41 years as an English teacher. After retirement in 2002, Ted continued to substitute at the Geneva Middle School and St. Peter's Catholic School in Aurora. He also worked twenty years as a summer youth counselor for the CETA and KDK programs. He taught at St. Augustine College in the evenings for twenty years. He served as a member of the Batavia School Board for seven and half years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pat. They started dating as sophomores in high school, and seven and a half years later they were married. Their journey led them to thirty countries and all fifty states. They spent two years in Kenya, East Africa where Ted taught in a special United States State Department program to upgrade teacher-training colleges in Kenya. Ted was an avid Chicago White Sox fan. He and Pat saw the second game of the 1959 World Series at old Comiskey Park and In 2005 his son, Michael, flew in from Houston with tickets for the first game of the World Series in Chicago.
Ted loved musical theater and was an opera buff. As a life-long educator, he taught his children and grandchildren the love of a good book and how to recite all of his favorite poems with great bravado. He journaled and photographed his extraordinary adventures as well as every first robin sighting of the year - his harbinger of Spring - since 1978. His family was paramount in his life, and he was most proud of all of them.
He leaves daughters Ann (Bill) Degnan of Sunfish Lake, MN and Laura Hoss of Eagan, MN. He is also survived by sons Paul (Linda) Hoss of Sugar Grove, IL, Michael (Kim) Hoss of The Woodlands, TX, and John Hoss of Aurora, IL. He is survived by twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Kelsey (Paul), Molly (Warren), Bailey (Connor), and Caroline Degnan; Margaret (Daniel), Amanda, and Fritz Engelhart; Brian (Erin), Lauren, Kevin, and Luke Hoss; and Addison Hoss. Two sisters survive him: Betty Moore and Linda Rix. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Pat Johnson, a brother, Richard Hoss and beloved grandson Matthew Engelhart.
Ted's joy was his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, his flowers and the cardinal that pecked at his window each day. He appreciated the help he received from his sons, John, Paul and Paul's children who lived nearby as well as the support from daughters Ann and Laura and son Michael from afar.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Annunciation BVM Catholic Church at 12:30 PM. Fr. Joel Rippinger OSB, of Marmion Abbey will be the celebrant with burial at Marywood Cemetery in Aurora.
