Scott W. Abel, age 66, of Montgomery, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his home on October 20, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born March, 2nd, 1959 in Aurora, Illinois. Scott dedicated more than 40 years of service as a volunteer firefighter with the Moecherville Fire Department, the Montgomery Fire Department, and the Aurora Township Fire Department. His favorite years were spent as an EMT and engineer, and he took great pride driving the fire truck. Even while ill, he never missed listening to the fire-radio, staying connected to his team and the community he loved. Scott also worked for 18 years in maintenance at Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora.
Outside of his fire service, Scott enjoyed puzzles, watching Perry Mason, and operating his model-train collection; hobbies that brought him quiet joy and a chance to unwind.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Claudia; his daughter, Jennifer (Alex Nixon) Abel of Davenport, IA; his son, Matthew Abel of Montgomery, IL; his mother, Rosemary (Linden) Abel of Aurora, IL; his aunt, Helen Greene of Akron, OH; nephews Ryan (Sabrina) Abel of Plainfield, IL and Charlie (Amber) Abel of Mesa, AZ; his great-nephew Zachary Abel of Plainfield, IL; numerous cousins; and his dear friend Joseph Ciarniello, who visited him faithfully.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Charles Abel; brothers Jeffery, David, Bradley; sister Denise; and by his grandparents, as well as many beloved aunts and uncles.
A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date and the burial will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Daleiden Mortuary (220 N. Lake Street, Aurora, IL 60506).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Scott's honor to the Aurora Township Fire Department, supporting the vital work he deeply believed in.
