Obituary

Neal Richard Wenckus, of Oswego, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on August 18, 2026, at the age of 54.

Neal The Steel was born in Aurora, Illinois, on June 28, 1972, to Richard N. Wenckus and Elizabeth J. (Wittry) Arterburn. Neal was a man who could make people laugh, often with a quick joke, a funny comment, or simply his own unique way of looking at life. He had a personality that could light up a room, and those who knew him will remember not only his sense of humor, but the smiles and laughter he brought to the people around him.

He graduated from Bradley University, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and later earned his MBA from Aurora University. Neal worked as a Realtor in the Aurora area with Keller Williams, where his nickname, fittingly, was "Neal-Estate." His sense of humor followed him wherever he went, and he had a way of making even ordinary moments memorable.

He loved playing pool and was a member of both APA and BCA, where he played at a skill level of 6. He also enjoyed golfing and spending time with his three beloved cats. Neal was a member of the 3rd Ward Club, as well as the Turners Club and Rudy's Place, where he enjoyed the friendships and connections that became an important part of his life.

Above all, Neal loved his family. He married Amber Alvarez on December 4, 2025, at the Kane County Courthouse. Their time together was precious, and Neal was grateful for the love they shared.

Neal is survived by his beloved wife, Amber Alvarez; his son, Steven (Aliyah) Wenckus; his daughter, Samantha (Alec) Losselyoung; his brothers, Chad (Joyce) Arterburn and Matthew Arterburn; his sisters, Jenna (Jim) Gomoll and Katie (Ryan) Dougherty; his former wife, Jennifer Wenckus; his stepfather, Dale Arterburn; his grandmother, Eleanor Wenckus; and his cousins, Stacia and Jill Wenckus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved grandchild, Aurora Alvarez Brown.
Neal leaves behind more than memories, he leaves behind stories, laughter, inside jokes, friendships, and the countless moments when he made someone smile. He will be remembered for his big personality, his humor, his love of family, and the way he could bring laughter into the lives of those around him. For those who knew Neal, there will surely be moments when a memory of something he said or did brings a smile and a laugh, even through the tears.
