John D Thompson passed away on January 31st. He was born on August 25, 1934, to Pearle and Margaret (Bennett) Thompson in Lasalle, IL. He went to Sion School (a one room school) in Waltham, IL and graduated from Lasalle Peru High School in 1953.
He served in the Army from 1957 – 1959 where he was a lineman which began his career. He received the Good Conduct Medal and was recognized as a sharpshooter and marksman. He began his career with Illinois Bell and later retired from AT&T. Following his retirement, he embarked on a new journey starting up Thompson Tel-wire where he enjoyed working alongside his son and grandchildren.
John was deeply involved with the Community Baptist Church, serving on the Agape board and volunteering as their handyman. He was also a member of the American Legion. For many years, he cherished going for coffee with his friends and sharing stories at Toms Market (Family Foods).
He is survived by his wife, Carol (married 63 years), children Paula Hlava, Mark (Sarah) Thompson, John (Nancy) Barberis, grandchildren, Christopher (Jen) Barberis, Andrew (Karen) Hlava, Katelyn (Aaron) Roecker, Jessica Thompson, Kylie (Manny) Perez, Allison (Taylor) Thill, Aaron Barberis and 21 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Marguerite Murphy of Aurora, IL, Anna (Tom) Schwieckert of Collinsville and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Jamie Barberis, sisters, Judith Thompson, Carol Jean Davis, Nancy Uranich, Mildred Bruski and his brother George Thompson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Community Baptist Church Warrenville, Illinois; Rev. Michael Strickland will officiate with interment at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton, Illinois.
In state visitation will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2025 from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour at 1:00 PM at Community Baptist Church 28W444 Main St, Warrenville, IL 60555.
