Dr. Donald M. Lies

Dr. Donald M. Lies, 90 lifelong resident of Aurora passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 1, 1922 in Aurora. Don was a devoted member of Holy Angels church for sixty years. He served our county in the United States Air Force during WWII. He was a graduate of Marmion Military Academy in 1939 and graduated from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1944. He practiced general dentistry in the Aurora area for sixty years until his retirement in 2005. Don was one of the founders of the Aurora Dental Arts Building. He was a member of the American Legion, The Moose, Elk, Serra and Optimist Clubs in Aurora; the Aurora Tennis Club, the American Dental Association, the Aurora and Fox Valley Dental Society and the Snow Drifter Ski Club. Don loved the arts, especially music. He was a member of the American Legion Bands in both Aurora and in Yorkville, the Blue Moon Band and the Waubonsee Dance Band. Don loved gardening and enjoyed his Tuesday lunch group with his close friends for many years. He was very active, participating in 5K runs and playing tennis. He loved traveling to dental conventions around the United States, visiting Florida beaches and traveling with his family on camping trips to Minoqua, WI. Don was known especially for his sense of humor, his devotion to his family and he will be deeply missed. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Helen (Cornille) Lies; six children, Stephanie (Michael) Kartheiser, Kathy Kartheiser, Scott Lies, Laura (Craig) Anderson, Julie (John) Keilty and David Lies; his sister, Marion Probst; ten grandchildren, Eric, Paul and Ryan Kartheiser, Beth and Jodi Kartheiser, Elizabeth Lies, Melissa Ehrhart, and Jack, Katrina and Sam Keilty; eight great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the caregivers at Provena Mercy Hospice and to the “Visiting Angels”, especially Tammy and Linda. He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Catherine (Besch) Lies; one brother Fr. Eric Lies, OSB and by one grandson, Patrick Kartheiser. Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, 2012 at 9:30 am at THE DALEIDEN MORTUARY to Holy Angels Church at 10:00 am. Msgr. Martin Heinz will officiate with interment in Marywood Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a liturgical wake service at 7:00 PM at THE DALEIDEN MORTUARY, 220 North Lake Street, Aurora, IL 60506 (630) 631-5500.
