Vernice R. Hurd

Vernice Rice Hurd, 86 of Aurora, Illinois passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday February 25th. Mrs. Hurd was the daughter of Dr. Imas Pryor and Emma Johnson Rice RN of Aurora IL. Vernice was the sixth child of seven. She is survived by her brother Dr. [Joe] Ransom Rice, her three children: Marcia Hurd-Wade [Phil Wade] of Marietta GA; Virginia Hurd Lilly [Jed Lilly] of Winchester VA and Dr. Martin J Hurd [Ging] of Morton IL, six grandchildren, a great-grandson and numerous loving extended Rice and Hurd families. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Eleanor Rachielle, Catherine Probst , Marian Smith, and Florence Norell and brother Imas W. Rice. Vernice was a graduate of West Aurora High. She attended Aurora College. She raised three children on the straight and narrow. She worked for over 20 years for the Old Second National Bank in customer service and lending, where her quiet efficiency and common-sense financial guidance was appreciated by her customers and community. Vern supported numerous local organizations with the Old 2nd National Bank: Mercy & Copley Hospitals; Aurora & Waubonsee Colleges; Aurora Library and the League of Women Voters. Vern enjoyed her family, friends and coworkers; good music, movies, theater, food and a good joke or a good book. She loved to travel and learn. Vern was an avid painter and member of the Aurora Art League and Chicago Art Institute; she served over a decade on the SCORE [Service Corp of Retired Executives] Business Council assisting small businesses with their finances and focus. As a retired member of Holy Angels Church, she and her sister-in-law, Lorayne Rice, participated in the adoration prayer schedule and other parish activities. She will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 1st. Visitation is at 11:00AM at Holy Angels with Mass to follow at 12:00. Interment at Mt. Olivet.
