Janet L. Ahasic

Janet Lorraine (Novotne) Ahasic of Sugar Grove, IL passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at her son's home, where she’d spent her last weeks surrounded by her six children and their families. Born July 27, 1927 in Harvey, IL, Janet was the daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude Novotne and loving wife to the late Leo Ahasic, Sr. Following her 1945 graduation from West Aurora High School, Janet became Executive Assistant to the president of Northern Illinois Gas Company. Before long, she’d met Leo, who charmed her with picnics along the Fox River, dancing in Chicago and, eventually, a proposal of marriage with a cigar band. After their marriage in 1949, Janet often assisted the Ahasic family business, The Aurora Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company, with her bookkeeping skills. An active member of the community, Janet volunteered her time at Copley Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and she also spent many years as a swim instructor for persons with disabilities at both the YWCA and Keeler School. She is a former member of the Fox Valley Art Society, the St. Anne’s Society of Holy Angels Parish, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Janet enjoyed swimming, golf, tennis, bridge, Chanel No. 5, and Fannie May chocolates. A lifelong artist, Janet studied watercolor painting under Ruth Van Sickle Ford at Aurora College. She was an avid reader and expertly solved The New York Times’ crossword puzzles “in ink.” Janet’s greatest joy was the large family she lovingly raised with Leo. Janet is survived by children Leo (Barbara) Ahasic Jr., Dr. Gary (Judy) Ahasic, Annette (Steven) Rector, David (Deryn) Ahasic, Richard (Suzi Maksic) Ahasic, and Mary (Michael Sr.) O’Connor; grandchildren Kristin (Brian) Stumm, Heather Ahasic, Justin (Dr. Stephanie) Ahasic, Erin (Nathaniel) Repp, Jacqueline (Brian Neal) Ahasic, Lauren Ahasic, Jared (Katie) Rector Esq., Adam Rector, Dawson Ahasic, Dylan Ahasic, Dr. Michael O'Connor, Catherine O'Connor, Jane O'Connor and Elizabeth O’Connor; and great-grandchildren Brooke, Evan and Paige Stumm, Benjamin and Evelyn Ahasic, and Brandt and Courtney Repp. In addition to her parents and husband, Janet was preceded in death by her brothers Frank and Lee Novotne. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 10:00 AM from THE DALEIDEN MORTUARY to Holy Angels Church at 10:30 AM. Fr. James Canova will officiate with interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
