Carl R. Tappan

Carl R. Tappan, 80, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013 at The Tillers Nursing Home. He was born January 7, 1933 in Aurora, Illinois. Carl married Mary Jane Pierce on November 29, 1952 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aurora. Carl was employed as a crew dispatcher by the Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1994. He loved tinkering and fixing things and was the “handyman” to all of his children. He loved spending time with his family, playing Texas Holdem at the weekly family dinners, and celebrating birthdays and every holiday. Carl and Mary enjoyed bowling together in their early years. Carl was an exceptional bowler, earning him the nickname “Captain Crunch”. He loved fishing with his brother and making beer battered fish for the family. He enjoyed working at the railroad with his brother for many years, and will be dearly missed by his seven children. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Jane (Pierce) Tappan; two sons, Carl (Diane Meyer) Tappan of Montgomery and Curtiss Tappan of Aurora; five daughters: Carla Seaton of Aurora, Carole Stephenson of Aurora, Caren (Stephen) Reilly of Oswego, Cynthia (Dennis) O’Boyle of Aurora and Christine (Steve) Miller of Oswego; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Bernard Tappan in 1945; his mother, Barbara (Hoffman) Kuehl in 2000; his brother, Robert Albert Tappan in 1988; and his son-in-law, William Glenn Seaton in 2012. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 8, 2013 from THE DALEIDEN MORTUARY at 9:00 AM to St. Joseph Church at 9:30 AM. Fr. Jerome Leake will officiate with interment at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM, with a Liturgical Wake Service at 5:30 PM, at THE DALEIDEN MORTUARY, 220 N. Lake St., Aurora. 630-631-5500.
