We regularly deal with the Veterans Administration for veteran benefits,
some of which are listed below. This is not an all-inclusive list.
While each veteran's benefits vary due to different circumstances,
a veteran is generally entitled to the following benefits:
Headstone or marker
Burial flag
Headstones
Headstones are provided for an unmarked grave anywhere in the world.
The grave must be unmarked to warrant this government expense.
The headstone must be applied for from the VA if burial is not a national
or government cemetery. The cost of shipping the stone is covered, but
the VA does not pay for placing the headstone.
Marker Descriptions
Types are available in a style consistent with the particular cemetery.
Burial Flag
The American flag is used to drape the casket of a veteran. After the
service, the flag may be given to the next of kin.
Additional benefits may apply to veterans who reside in a VA facility
or if the death was service related.
Military Honors
Cemeteries do not provide military honors, but referrals may be made
to military units or volunteer groups.
National Cemetery Benefits
Benefits available at national cemeteries include:
Grave space
Opening and closing of the grave
Grave liner
Headstone or marker
Perpetual care
Grave space in a national cemetery cannot be reserved. Funeral directors
making burial arrangements must apply for space at the time of death.
Receipt of Benefits
To facilitate receiving benefits, you will need the following:
Discharge papers
Death certificate
Proof of marriage
Proof of termination of marriage
Proof of age and relationship of any children
If an official discharge document is not available, give as many items
as possible. Provide the name of the veteran with rank, serial number,
Social Security number, VA claim number, date and place of entry and
separation of service, date and place of birth, and date of death.
Descendent Benefits
The interment of an eligible descendent will be authorized in any national
cemetery in which space is available. When a death occurs and interment
in a national cemetery is authorized, the grave spaces are assigned
by the cemetery director.
